Advocacy: Canada - U.S. Trade Tariffs'
As a member of the Annapolis Valley Chamber, you are a part of a much larger Chamber network.
Tuesday, your Chamber team, alongside colleagues from across Nova Scotia, had the opportunity to join Premier Tim Houston for a proactive discussion on the potential impact of looming U.S. economic tariffs. The key takeaway? Now is the time to prioritize Nova Scotia’s economic growth with a ‘Canada-first’ approach.
Exciting discussions are already underway
regarding the removal of interprovincial trade barriers.
We succeed together, and when we divide ourselves with tariffs – the greatest economic union in the world that has thrived for decades falls apart.
The Stakes in Numbers:
- U.S. GDP would shrink by 1.6% (approximately USD $467 billion).
- Canada’s GDP would shrink by 2.6% (approximately CAD $78 billion).
- Canada is the largest export market for the U.S., accounting for $300 billion in goods annually, and the largest export market for the U.S. in 34 states, not just those near the border in places like Michigan and Montana. This relationship supports the U.S. economy nationwide, reaching all the way down to the Southern border in Mississippi and Florida.
· When 3.7M jobs are supported by exports and investment (2.3M in Canada, 1.4M in U.S.), we cannot afford to disrupt this growing and historic partnership.
The Stakes for People
- Tariffs don’t just hit businesses, they hit your wallet. From the food you eat, to the car you drive, to the electricity you use to heat your home. At a time when affordability is already stretched thin for Americans and Canadians, this is the last thing we need.
- These tariffs don’t just impact Canada — they hit American families where it matters most: at the checkout line. You might be hearing that there are winners and losers in this trade war, but the reality is this is a lose-lose proposition.
- It threatens jobs in neighbourhoods across America and Canada. Preserving the trade partnership with Canada is essential for protecting livelihoods and keeping costs down for families.
- The economic relationship between Canada and the U.S. is significant, with $3.6 billion in daily ($1.3 Trillion annual) cross-border trade.
- These tariffs don’t just disrupt trade; they send shockwaves through the entire economy, raising costs, stalling innovation, and threatening long-term growth. From manufacturers to farmers, the pain will be felt across every sector
- The average American would lose USD $1,300 annually.
- The average Canadian would lose CAD $1,900 annually.

A Partnership Worth Saving: Why U.S.-Canada Tariffs Are a Threat to Us All
From the Desk of Rhonda Tulk-Lane, CEO, Atlantic Chamber of Commerce
Imagine this: a long-standing marriage built on mutual trust, shared goals, and the daily work of supporting one another. This is the kind of relationship that Canada and the United States have enjoyed for decades. A marriage of two neighbors that has fostered economic growth, created millions of jobs, and supported families on both sides of the border. But now, in less than 24 hours that partnership stands at the brink of crisis. The looming threat of a 25% tariff on Canadian goods is a divorce that threatens to shatter something irreplaceable.
